Mega Dials

Omega's recent releases.

When Omega brand ambassador George Clooney sported an 18-karat white-gold De Ville Trésor Master Co-Axial chronometer at his wedding this past September in Italy, the recently released model generated buzz as a star-style choice. For a man like Clooney, whose magnetism won’t be dulled by marriage, it’s a good thing that the timepiece was equipped with Omega’s Master Co-Axial movement, which resists magnetic fields greater than 15,000 gauss (1.5 tesla). The Swiss watch manufacturer launched the anti-magnetic technological breakthrough last year—it was six years in the making—to widespread acclaim.

One of the main adoptees of Master Co-Axial technology this season is the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra. Its 18-karat gold model is a showstopper, still incorporating the collection’s standard “teak concept” of vertical lines layered onto the dial. Its sibling, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean, which first debuted in 1957, refreshes its functions with a new GMT feature allowing the wearer to identify dual time zones. It still has a James Bond–worthy helium escape valve, subtly affixed to the 10 o’clock spot of the bezel, that allows divers to go deep and then rise to the surface without an exploding watch affixed to the wrist.

From under the waves to a more celestial orbit, the Omega Constellation Pluma debuts new fall colours for its mother-of-pearl dials—light blue, cream, and pink—with other small touches of brilliance, such as an option for 18-karat gold central hour, minute, and second hands. (When built with a Omega Co-Axial calibre 8520 mechanism, the timepiece is water-resistant to 100 metres.) And the new Omega De Ville Prestige Butterfly collection incorporates that very fluttering motif directly into its delicate mother-of-pearl dial background, inspired by butterflies’ emblematic attribution to love and longevity in Chinese culture. With the future in mind, Omega is already looking forward to its next phase as official timekeeper of the Olympic Games with an official commemorative timepiece in polished and brushed stainless steel. The Omega Speedmaster Mark II “Rio 2016” Limited Edition Olympic has a logo-stamped screw-in caseback, and will be produced in a limited edition run of just 2,016—surely to be sold out by game time.
