Calgary’s Best Pies

On a quest for the country’s finest pies.

Canada's Best Pies, Calgary, The Pie Hole

We asked judges in Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, and Toronto to select the finest pies in their respective cities. Here are Calgary’s results.

The Pie Junkie
The newest pie proprietors on the block, the Pie Junkie is tucked away in a low-traffic strip mall but is well worth the visit—they make a range of pies, from the large and fancy to small hand pies filled with fruits or meats—ideal for eating in at their casual table, or taking to go for lunch, dinner, or a picnic.

Bliss Bakery
Bliss makes wonderful pies—and the best butter tarts around. They left Chinatown after the 2013 flood and are now located on Northmount Drive. You’ll also find they serve excellent galette-style, open-faced fruit pies that are perfect for one or two.

The Lazy Loaf & Kettle
The Lazy Loaf was built on family recipes—for over 20 years, Calgarians have tucked into comforting wedges of classic homemade varieties like rhubarb sour cream custard pie.

The Blackfoot Truck Stop
Since they opened in 1956, the 24-hour Blackfoot Truck Stop has been known for their mile high diner-style pies—think lemon meringue and the classic cream flapper—which you can order by the slice at the counter, along with a cup of coffee.

Cadence Coffee
Cadence in Bowness always has apple pie on hand—but you’ll find a pie of the day on a cake stand alongside their muffins, cookies, and squares, too. A big slice of coconut cream with their signature buttery crust is perfect anytime, but most rotating options are seasonal.

Decadent Brulee
Decadent Brulee has been baking for Calgarians since 1983—they have some of the fanciest pies in the city, and some of the most delicious—think seasonal fruit pies, but also upscale versions of pecan, lemon meringue, and chocolate or coconut cream, for when you have a special occasion that calls for pie.

A previous version of this article included the Pie Cloud, which closed on January 8, 2017.

This article has been updated to reflect the Pie Hole’s new name, the Pie Junkie, and Decadent Dessert’s new name, Decadent Brulee.
