Aspen Art Museum

The Aspen Art Museum has stood on the banks of Colorado’s Roaring Fork River since 1979, but after significant growth in visitors in recent years, it needed more room to stretch. This August, the contemporary art museum will present its expanded, 33,000-square-foot facility, relocated to Aspen’s downtown core. The new building, situated only blocks away from Aspen Mountain, is set to have a public grand opening that will run for 24 hours, revealing six gallery spaces spread over the building’s four floors—triple the exhibition space of the original structure. Design of the revamped AAM is care of architect Shigeru Ban, whose lauded body of work (which includes several humanitarian housing projects) was affirmed with this year’s Pritzker Architecture Prize.
