A Pinch of Design: the 15th Anniversary of an Iconic British Design Studio

Studio collection.

In July, British design studio PINCH celebrated its 15th anniversary by opening its second shop, just off Pimlico Road in London’s Belgravia district, and introducing new products to boot. Husband and wife designers Russell Pinch and Oona Bannon launched PINCH from their kitchen table; today, that table is a Harper of their own design, with a painstakingly developed oil finish that lets the timber age nobly and an intelligent mechanism that allows the leaves to be stored inside effortlessly. The table, a trifecta of comfort, functionality, and aesthetics, is like the most sophisticated person at a party turning out to be warmly engaging.

“We live with all our pieces and take time to observe how a chamfer could be gentler, how a drawer should close more effortlessly, how the proportions make you feel,” says Bannon. “We often anthro-pomorphize them: ‘Her shoulders are too hunched… That headboard doesn’t stand proud enough… Is that piece too pigeon-toed?’ ”
