Ferrari spent many years designing the interior spaces of international luxury residences and hotels, ultimately realizing that there was an opportunity in the market to use his experience curating spaces to design furniture of his own. Now, Editions has debuted at Tribeca’s design outpost Colony. Comprised of 20 pieces, including a limited-edition bronze desk, a faceted mirror, and cobalt-hued velvet sofa with brushed brass legs, Editions was inspired by duality. “When it comes to inspiration I’m drawn to a multitude of influences,” Ferrari explains. “There is a cultural freedom, which comes from being Canadian, and I like the idea of exploring a cultural mash-up through my work. I’m drawn to the purity of Japanese minimalism and the strength of Italian Rationalism. Duality and balance is huge for me.”

A collection of unified objects in dialogue with one another, each piece exudes a sense of quiet refinement. “There is a sense of optimism in exploring the intersection of decadence and restraint,” he adds. “I love the idea that at its core, design is about celebrating the human experience.” Velvets, linens, and leathers are paired with cool metal frames, manipulating materials as to encourage a sense of exploration and surprise for those interacting with the piece.

Studio Paolo Ferrari celebrates the authenticity of materials through tactility, while the juxtaposition between form and function demonstrates an unexpected beauty.
