Dining out can be a welcome reprieve from hurried weekday meals that find us downing dinner at the kitchen counter or sipping smoothies from behind a steering wheel. And so, when choosing a restaurant, where we want to eat matters as much as what we want to eat—be it a tapas at a sleek art deco bar or moules marinières at an elegant belle époque-inspired bistro.

In celebration of exceptional places to dine, the annual Restaurant and Bar Design Awards recognizes the best design and architecture in the world of food and beverage. Entries come from around the globe and run the gamut from burger vans to Michelin-starred restaurants, airports to museums, and even pop-up eateries.

This year’s awards shortlist sees nominees such as Kengo Kuma’s Shizuku in Portland, where one can dine beneath a soft, curving canopy of bamboo screens, and Nanan, Poland’s éclair-shaped ode to millennial pink, designed by Buck Studio. Eight Canadian entries also grace the list, including East Studio’s Planta, located in Toronto, StudioMunge’s Nightingale in Vancouver, and Solid Design and Build Inc.’s Sub Rosa, in Calgary.

Browse through a selection of this year’s shortlist nominees and find inspiration for your next ambient evening out.
