The Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe

A stately compound on a secluded patch of South Lake Tahoe shoreline, its massive lawn sloping toward a private dock. Snow falling on the sapphire lake as the pale midwinter sun sinks beneath the Sierra Nevada. Taking it all in, you half expect to see a brooding Michael Corleone in the boathouse, reflecting on the nature of evil as that fratricidal pistol shot cracks the silence.

The setting may recall the family fortress in the Godfather: Part II, but the only thing criminal about the Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe—a recent addition to the Preferred Hotels & Resorts L.V.X. Collection—is having to check out. Occupying 95 hectares of pristine lakefront straddling the California-Nevada state line, this LEED-Silver certified luxury mountain lodge opened in June 2017.  Just an hour’s drive from Reno-Tahoe International Airport, it offers a welcome alternative to the tired casino hotels and dated log cabins comprising much of the South Lake Tahoe area’s ski and golf getaway accommodations.

Architecturally inspired by the American West’s classic national park lodges, the Edgewood’s 154 wood panelled and oceanic blue accented rooms and suites feature all of the comforts and amenities of an upscale lodge, including in-room gas fireplaces, premium linens, private decks or terraces, soaker tubs, and unobstructed views of the lake and adjacent 18-hole championship Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. Designed by the legendary George Fazio in 1968, this iconic fairway hosts the annual star-studded American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament.

Popular among avid golfers, the Lodge at Edgewood also now draws well-heeled skiers, especially around Spring Break, as Heavenly Mountain Resort’s base gondola is just five kilometres away. Part of the Vail Resorts Epic Pass family of resorts, Heavenly is legendary for its bountiful powder, annually recording some of the highest amounts of annual snowfall in North America, and spectacular views of glittering Lake Tahoe from its slopes. And while it isn’t technically ski-in, ski-out, the Edgewood offers complimentary Mercedes van shuttle and ski-valet service.

Boasting 11-metre-high floor-to-vaulted ceiling windows facing the lake and a grand staircase ascending beside a signature limestone wall inlaid with actual tree trunks, the lodge’s impressive lobby sets a grand yet welcoming tone. In winter, guests pass through it to access the lap-friendly heated outdoor pool and hot tub. Or to curl up next to one of several cozy outdoor fire pits scattered around the lawn to roast s’mores provided complimentary from the resort’s concierge staff. They can also retreat to the 8,500-square-foot full-service spa for treatments tailored to relieve tired muscles after a day on the slopes.

Casual dining options include the casual 200-seat bistro in the main lodge, and the Frank Gehry–designed Brooks’ Bar and Deck, located just off the 18th hole. For more sumptuous fine dining fare, the Edgewood Restaurant offers a menu that includes charbroiled octopus, Hudson Valley foie gras, Alaskan king crab legs, and seared elk chops. All enjoyed beneath picture windows offering the most magnificent lake and Sierra sunset views in South Lake Tahoe.
