Conversation Piece

Enjoy our Sunday series, Conversation Piece, a NUVO–curated digest of things on the Internet we think you’ll want to talk about.

Eat me. In spite of time some of us spend speaking to our plants, there is no denying it: plants can’t talk. That being said, they do have ways of communicating with animals in order to increase their chances of being eaten, and therefore having their seeds spread elsewhere. For The New York Times, JoAnna Klein looks at the intricate relationships between plants and animals. Read more, here.

Bye bye, Big Bird. Gone are the days of Saturday morning cartoons—today, the main source of entertainment for children comes from YouTube. Consider, for example, a channel called ChuChu TV which produces animated videos set to nursery rhyme songs. As The Atlantic reports, the company is responsible for some of the most widely viewed toddler content on YouTube, garnering millions of views within days and proving to be a fast-growing threat to competitors like Sesame Street and Nickelodeon. So, what is it about these videos that has toddlers transfixed? Delve into the vast and often strange world of children’s YouTube, here.

Bat vision. If you’ve ever found yourself stumbling from your bedroom to the washroom in the middle of the night, perhaps you ought to try learning echolocation. No, seriously. One man, after losing his vision at a young age, taught himself to navigate by making clicking sounds with his mouth and listening to how those sounds interact with his surroundings. Now, he even teaches others how to master the skill. Get the full story, here.

The Great Pumpkin Bread. Autumn is now in full force and what better way to honour the season than with a highly appropriate baked good. For fall, that means a super-moist pumpkin bread packed with spiced goodness and served with a side of salted maple butter. Note that the maple butter can be made in advance, though there’s a good chance it’ll disappear within a few days. Find the recipe, here.
